Khalifa towers over rivals at Towcester

Towcester, England

Saturday July 1, 2023

BURJ KHALIFA gained reward for his top-class efforts at Towcester by winning the Time Greyhound Nutrition Challenge Trophy, the race after the English Greyhound Derby Final on the UK’s biggest night’s racing.

Trained by Brendan Matthews of Newry for Chris Sower, Burj Khalifa made the English Derby semi-finals at Towcester and, while connections were disappointed not to make the main event some 25 minutes before, a double on the night for the Matthews kennel proved popular for racegoers who finished on a high with Gaytime Nemo’s Derby win followed by Burj Khalifa’s success and then Space Jet winning back-to-back Dorando Marathons.

“Graham is a client and we have a super-premium racing food called Time Record Breaker, so he clearly read the script!”

“It was an incredible 45 minutes of racing and the crowd loved it,” said Time’s William Rigney. “Well done to Brendan, Damien and Plunkett, and to owner Chris. Their dog deserved this success after a great Towcester campaign.”

“Time really enjoyed their connection with the English Greyhound Derby this year. We supported some of the graded races on three first-round nights which kicked off the Derby and were back on final night with the Time Greyhound Nutrition Challenge Trophy.”

“Well done to Graham Holland’s kennel for winning back-to-back English Derbys. That’s an incredible achievement, of course, but even before Gaytime Nemo saved the best for last in the final, kennelmates Swords Rex and Clona Duke – twice – broke the track record at Towcester.”
